Michael E. Schmidt of The Schmidt Firm, PLLC has stated, “Our law firm has represented thousands of victims in pharmaceutical side effect and recall cases, however being a father of four, this particular litigation [SSRI birth defects] really strikes home. We are actively representing the children and families affected by the manufacturer’s inability to warn the mothers of the potential for SSRI-induced birth defects when taken during pregnancy.”

UPDATE: Risk of PPHN Doubled in Women who Took Antidepressants

Researchers who studied 30,000 women who took antidepressants during pregnancy have found that the risk of PPHN was doubled for babies born to mothers who took SSRI antidepressants during pregnancy. The link was strongest when women took the medications late in pregnancy. The research was announced in January 2012. The researchers said that women who are pregnant and suffer from depression should talk to their doctor about the possible slight increased risk to their unborn child. Depression is also a serious illness, and may worsen without treatment. The risk of PPHN increases from 1.2 per 1,000 to 2.1 per 1,000 when a pregnant woman takes an SSRI antidepressant during pregnancy.
