September 22, 2015 — Maryland-based Picnic Gourmet Spreads has issued a recall for yogurt cheese spreads after a product tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.
No reports of food poisoning have been linked to the recall and the manufacturer says it is being issued voluntarily “out of an abundance of caution.”
Contamination was found in a product collected from a retail store and tested by the DMHM Office of Food Protection.
Recalled products include:
- Red Pepper Feta Cheese Spread
- Moroccan Cilantro Cheese Spread
- Tandoori Garlic Cheese spread
- Herbed Goat Cheese
- Parmesan Cheese Spread
- Chipotle Sage Cheese Spread

The yogurt cheese spreads had “Best By” dates of October 6 and were distributed in Maryland, Kentucky, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington, D.C., Minnesota, and Illinois.
Victims may develop symptoms like nausea, diarrhea, fever, muscle aches, confusion, and convulsions. These symptoms usually appear within three weeks, but it can take up to 10 weeks.
Infection with Listeria is rare but often serious, especially for people with weak immune systems. Pregnant women may only experience mild flu-like symptoms or fever, but complications can be devastating for an unborn baby:
“Because Listeria infection can cause premature labor, premature delivery, miscarriage, stillbirth or severe infection of newborns, it is especially important that pregnant women avoid these products.”
