Prilosec and Stomach Cancer

In November 2017, a study published in the journal Gut found a doubled (2X) higher risk of stomach cancer for people who were on long-term treatment with heartburn medications in the Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) class, which includes popular antacids like Prilosec.

Heartburn Drugs May Increase Risk of Death

July 2017 — Researchers have linked the use of PPI heartburn drugs with up to a 50% increased risk of death compared to H2-blocker heartburn drugs, according to a study published in the journal BMJ Open. The researchers estimated 1 excess death per 500 people who take a PPI. Click here to read more.

What is Prilosec?

Prilosec (omperazole) treats gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a condition in which acid from the stomach burns the esophagus. Many people take Prilosec every day to prevent heartburn, ulcers, and further damage to the esophagus.

Prilosec and Nephritis

Prilosec belongs to a class of medications called proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs), which decrease the amount of acid made in the stomach. In December 2014, the FDA updated the label on Prilosec and other PPIs to include stronger warnings about acute interstitial nephritis. Nephritis occurs when sudden inflammation causes the kidneys to swell, often due to an allergic reaction to Prilosec. Nephritis decreases kidney function and about 50% of people develop symptoms of kidney failure.

Prilosec and Chronic Kidney Disease

In January 2016, researchers at Johns Hopkins University published a study in JAMA Internal Medicine linking the daily use of PPIs with a 20-50% increased risk of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). This progressive kidney damage happens over many years and can lead to kidney failure. The kidneys lose their ability to clean the blood and many patients eventually require dialysis or a kidney transplant.

What is the problem?

The Schmidt Firm, PLLC is nationally recognized as a class action law firm, but our lawyers are not currently filing a Prilosec class action. Instead, we are filing individual lawsuits and only accepting cases involving severe side effects, such as:

  • Kidney failure
  • Renal damage
  • Nephritis
  • Kidney inflammation
  • Stomach cancer
  • And more

About Class Actions

Class actions are the most popular way for large groups of consumers to seek refunds and reimbursement for purchasing defective products. They are useful when a lot of people have similar legal claims. Everyone collectively seeks compensation and shares any payout.

Why Our Law Firm is Filing Individual Lawsuits as Opposed to a Class Action

The problem with class actions is that they are designed for efficiency, rather than helping individual plaintiffs with the most severe injuries. Members may also have accept “low-ball” settlements attorneys’ fees that take a huge cut of the payout.

Instead of a class action, our lawyers focus on helping individuals with severe injuries maximize their financial compensation. We believe there is no excuse for drug-makers who fail to warn about severe side effects. If you decide to file a lawsuit, you could receive compensation for your injury, medical expenses, and more.
