Raw Farm Cheddar E. Coli Outbreak
In February 2024, Raw Farm Cheddar Cheese was recalled at Sprouts Farmers Market, Bristol Farms, and other stores after 10 people were infected with E. coli.
What Happened?
At least 10 people in 4 states were infected with E. Coli O157:H7 after eating Raw Farm Cheddar Cheese products. The illnesses were reported in California (4), Colorado (3), Utah (2), and Texas (1), according to the CDC Outbreak Investigation.
Four people were hospitalized due to a severe infection. One person was also diagnosed with Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), which is a life-threatening type of kidney failure that occurs in 5-10% of people who are infected with E. coli O157:H7.
How To Identify Recalled Cheese
The recall involves Raw Farm® Raw Cheddar Cheese, which was sold in blocks and bags of shredded cheese. The recall involves original flavors and Cheddar with added Jalapeño flavor. It was sold at Sprouts Farmers Market, Bristol Farms, and other retailers.
Food Poisoning History of Raw Farm LLC
The recall was announced by Raw Farm LLC, a raw milk dairy farm based in Fresno, California that was formerly known as Organic Pastures. The company has been linked to several outbreaks of food poisoning, including Salmonella.
In October 2023, health officials in San Diego, California warned the public after 12 people got Salmonella from drinking raw unpasteurized milk from Raw Farm. Three children were hospitalized.
The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) also posted a recall for Raw Farm milk and heavy cream on October 24, including products with “best by” dates between October 11 and November 6.
In August 2023, Raw Farm Cheddar Cheese was also recalled and quarantined by health officials in California after a random sample tested positive for Salmonella. The recall involves “Raw Farm Cheddar” in one-pound (16 oz) blocks with a code date marked on the plastic wrapper of BEST BY: 03/16/2024 and BATCH# 20230517-1.
Justice Department Injunction Against Raw Farm
Raw Farm LLC, previously known as Organic Pastures, is a dairy run by Mark McAfee. His company was the subject of an April 2010 Permanent Injunction, in which the U.S. Department of Justice restricted Raw Farm from distributing raw milk products. The injunction resolved a criminal case involving the illegal distribution of raw milk to out-of-state customers in 2007.
