Beovu and Retinal Vasculitis
Retinal vasculitis is a rare eye disease, but Beovu was linked to 26 reports of “occlusive retinal vasculitis” in its first 6 months on the market. Some patients lost their vision after just 2 doses of Beovu.
Case Report: Woman Suffers Retinal Vasculitis After 2 Doses of Beovu
In an alarming case report from August 2020, a 77 year-old woman lost most of her vision in her right eye after her 2nd injection of Beovu.
She noticed blurry vision immediately after the Beovu injection, but thought it was temporary. Three weeks later, she went to her doctor with a visual acuity of just 20/200 OU — which is considered to be severe visual impairment. She was diagnosed with retinal vasculitis.
What is Retinal Vasculitis?
Retinal vasculitis is a sight-threatening eye disease involving inflammation of the blood vessels in the retina. The retina is a thin layer of tissue in the back of the eye that senses light and sends signals to the brain so you can see.

Novartis Adds “Retinal Vasculitis” Warning to Beovu Label
In June 2020, Novartis made a major change to the Beovu label (PDF) by adding “retinal vasculitis” and “retinal vascular occlusion” to the list of Warnings & Precautions.
“Retinal vasculitis and/or retinal vascular occlusion, typically in the presence of intraocular inflammation, have been reported with the use of BEOVU. Patients should be instructed to report any change in vision without delay.”
