Ring Doorbell Recalled for Fire Hazard
In November 2020, Amazon’s subsidiary company Ring announced a recall for 350,000 Video Doorbells (2nd Generation) due to a fire hazard. “The video doorbell’s battery can overheat when the incorrect screws are used for installation, posing fire and burn hazards,” according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
How Many People Were Injured?
Ring reported 85 incidents of incorrect doorbell screws installed, including 23 doorbells that caught on fire and caused minor property damage. At least 8 people also suffered minor burn injuries.
What is the Problem?
The battery on the recalled Ring doorbells can overheat and catch on fire if it is punctured by during installation by using incorrect screws. Ring says there is “no risk to consumers or potential hazard” if the doorbell is installed correctly.
Ring is asking consumers to stop installing the recalled doorbells and contact Ring for new installation instructions, or information on how to download them.
What Ring Doorbells Are Included in the Recall?
Ring is only recalling Video Doorbells (2nd Generation) with model number 5UM5E5 and certain serial numbers. They were sold on Ring’s website, electronics and home good stores, and Amazon from June 2020 through October 2020 for about $100.
