Roos Foods Recall

Roos Foods, a Delaware-based producer of Central American-style soft cheeses, has recalled all products because they may be contaminated with Listeria.

Eight illnesses were reported in California and Maryland from August to November 2013, including one person who died. Seven people had to be hospitalized. Five illnesses were pregnancy-related (two mother-newborn pairs and one newborn).

Roos Foods Facility Shuts Down

In March 2014, the FDA revoked the food facility registration for Roos Foods, forcing the company to shut down. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) also conducted an outbreak investigation and found evidence of unsanitary conditions, including:

  • Leaking roof “raining” water onto storage tanks and processing equipment
  • Standing water on the floor next to cats of cheese in the processing room.
  • Rusting metal flaking off the roof and ceiling.
  • Food residue on “clean” equipment
  • Milk storage tanks were uncapped.
  • Deteriorating floor, walls, and equipment in poor repair.

What is Listeriosis?

Listeriosis is a disease caused by Listeria monocytogens, a bacteria that is commonly found in soil and water. People who eat contaminated food or water can develop food poisoning. The disease can become life-threatening if it invades the bloodstream (septicemia). Pregnant women can also have a miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, or other pregnancy complications.
