February 10, 2014 — Rx Formulations, a compounding pharmacy located in Mesa, Arizona, has announced a voluntary recall for calcium gluconate 10% injections after FDA inspectors found microbial contamination. Patients who received the contaminated medicine are at risk of life-threatening infections.
The recalled medicines were manufactured from November 7 through December 11, 2013. Lot #778961 is being recalled after inspectors confirmed the presence of gram-positive rod bacteria. Several other medicines were also recalled on December 13. According to the FDA:
“2 to 3 millimeter, irregularly shaped floating matter was observed in calcium gluconate injection from an intact, unused vial produced at Rx Formulations, Mesa, Ariz.”
Fortunately, no adverse events have been linked to the recalled medicines. Healthcare professionals should contact patients who received the injections. Patients who developed infections or have other concerns should contact their doctor immediately.
