Hummus Listeria Food Poisoning
Outbreaks of food poisoning from Listeria monocytogenes are rare, but the infection is often very serious — especially for children, older adults, immunocompromised people, and pregnant women. Invasive infections can cause bacteremia (blood poisoning) and meningitis (inflammation of the spinal cord and brain).
According to the FDA:
“Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.”
