August 22, 2014 — Sam’s Club is recalling some chicken Caesar salad kits sold in its in-store delis nationwide after officials in Michigan said two samples of cooked chicken tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can cause food poisoning.
There have been no reported illnesses.
The recall was issued by the food supplier, APPA Fine Foods, of Corona, California, and announced by the USDA and the Michigan Department of Agriculture.
According to health officials, two samples from one Sam’s Club warehouse location tested positive for Listeria. The recalled products were shipped nationwide.
Products included in the recall:
- Sam’s Club Daily Chef CHICKEN CAESAR SALAD KIT: 11-oz. clear plastic containers and 6.5-pound boxes with case codes 141851, 141922, 141951, 141991, 142021, 142201 or 142131 with use by dates of 8/14/14, 8/21/14, 8/27/14, 9/1/14, 9/3/14 or 9/17/14. The kits were produced on July 4, July 11, July 14, July 18, July 21, July 25, Aug. 1 and Aug. 8, 2014.
People who consume contaminated food are at risk of listeriosis, a serious type of food poisoning. Symptoms may include diarrhea, gastrointestinal problems, fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. In some cases, the infection spreads beyond the intestines and causes life-threatening blood poisoning (sepsis) or other complications.
Most healthy adults recover without long-term side effects, but the infection can be deadly for older adults, children, and people with weak immune systems. Pregnant women can also have a miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, or other pregnancy complications.
