July 25, 2014 — The USDA Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) has announced a recall for sandwiches and wraps sold by Great American Marketing, of Houston, Texas.
About 475 pounds of ready-to-eat food may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that causes food poisoning. Unlike most bacteria, Listeria can grow under refrigerator temperatures.
The recall was issued after a sample of a separate product tested positive for Listeria. The sample was collected on July 15 and tested positive on July 21. Although the sampled product was not sold, the company continued to make sandwiches and wraps on equipment that had not been completely cleaned.
Products involved in the recall:
- 7.4 ounce plastic-covered tray packages containing Chicken Caesar Wraps.
- 8.1 ounce plastic-covered tray packages containing Club Wraps.
- 10.5 ounce plastic-covered tray packages containing Ham and Cheddar Premium sandwiches.
- 10.5 ounce plastic-covered tray packages containing Turkey & Swiss Premium sandwiches.
The products have a sell-by date of July 26, 2014 and were distributed to stores throughout Texas. The label may have the establishment number “EST 31680” or “P-31680” inside the USDA mark of inspection.
What is Listeriosis?
Consumption of Listeria can lead to listeriosis, a type of food poisoning that is most serious for young children, the elderly, and people with weak immune systems. Pregnant women can also suffer a miscarriage or stillbirth. Symptoms of infection may include diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and more.
