July 21, 2023 — OSHA has proposed nearly $300,000 in fines for numerous safety violations at a Sanimax rendering plant in Wisconsin after a worker was severely burned.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the employee was severely burned by an explosion of hot oil and steam as workers tried to clear a blockage in January 2023.
When OSHA officials visited the Sanimax facility in Green Bay, Wisconsin, they discovered 10 serious safety and health violations, as well as 3 repeat violations.
Some of the safety violations discovered during the inspection included broken guardrails, unprotected walking surfaces, walking surfaces covered with production liquids, failures to prevent explosion hazards, electrical hazards, and unlabeled hot steam pipes.
Sanimax USA LLC is a subsidiary of a Canadian company. The facility collects the oily byproducts left over from meat processing and turns them into ingredients for pet food, soap, animal feed, and chemicals.
