June 5, 2015 — Santa Barbara Smokehouse has issued yet another recall for cold smoked salmon that might be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can cause serious infections.
This is the second recall from the company this year. Fortunately, neither recall has been linked to any reports of food poisoning.
The first recall was issued on January 8th for products sold under eleven brands, some of which were sold at Whole Foods grocery stores. Click here to read more.
Now, Santa Barbara Smokehouse is recalling smoked salmon produced from April 8th until May 1st, 2015. As a precaution, the company recommends destroying any frozen products produced before April 8th. The products have “best-by” dates between April 29th and May 6th.
Brands included in smoked salmon recall:
- Cambridge House
- Coastal Harbor
- Harbor Point
- North Shore S.F. Specialty
- Channel Islands
- Santa Barbara
Santa Barbara Smokehouse has emphasized that this is a precautionary recall. Tests on recalled products have been negative for Listeria.
However, once Listeria gets into a food processing facility, it is difficult to eradicate. The recall in January was issued after Listeria was found on surfaces that come in contact with food. Because smoked salmon is not cooked before it is eaten and Listeria grows under refrigeration temperatures, there is a higher risk of illness.
According to the FDA, infections can lead to serious complications:
“Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.”
