Stone Fruit Recall Expands to Whole Foods, Publix, and Kroger

July 29, 2014 — A recall involving stone fruits (peaches, nectarines, and plums) has expanded to Whole Foods, Publix Super Markets, and Kroger Co.

The products could potentially cause listeriosis, a severe type of food poisoning caused by the Listeria monocytogenes bacteria.

Whole Foods Markets in all states except Florida, Washington, and Oregon have also recalled made-in-store foods that were prepared between June 1 and July 21. The affected products include cakes, tarts, salsas, and prepared salads.

The recall was initiated on July 19 by the manufacturer, Wawona Packing Co. of Cutler, California, after internal testing detected Listeria. The facility was shut down and sanitized. Subsequent tests have been negative. Costco, Trader Joe’s, and Walmart issued recalls earlier this month.

According to the FDA, it is unclear where all the products were sold:

“The recalled products were shipped directly to retailers and wholesalers who resell the products. Because we do not know the locations of the companies that purchased the products from our direct customers, the company is issuing a nationwide recall.”

The FDA says no illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalls. However, listeriosis is a severe type of food poisoning that can be deadly. It is most serious for young children, older adults, and people with weak immune systems. It can also cause miscarriage or stillbirth in pregnant women.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), listeriosis sickens at least 1,600 people in the United States every year, causing about 260 deaths annually. Symptoms may include fever, severe headache, muscle stiffness, confusion, convulsions, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and gastrointestinal problems.
