July 11, 2017 — Superpedestrian Inc. has issued a safety recall for approximately 230 electric bicycle conversion wheels because the rear axle can fail and cause a crash or serious injuries.
The recalled wheels are intended to convert a standard bicycle into an electric bicycle. They are compatible with 26-inch and 700cc wheel sizes, with all components housed inside the red hub of the wheel.
The recall involves Copenhagen Wheels manufactured by Superpedestrain of Cambridge, Massachusetts. No injuries have been reported, but failure of the rear axle poses a crash hazards to riders.
The recalled wheels can be identified by the following serial numbers located on the wheel’s user interface panel just above the axle: 01031708600020000000 through 01031710400250000000 for multi-speed wheels and 02031708600020000000 through 02031710400250000000 for single speed wheels.
The wheels were made in the U.S. and sold exclusively on superpedestrian.com between March 2017 and April 2017 for about $1,500.
Superpedestrian is urging consumers to immediately stop using the recalled bicycle wheels and contact the company for a free replacement wheel.
