December 1, 2015 — The FDA has issued a recall for dozens of products made with Taylor Farms celery after an outbreak of E. coli was traced to Costco rotisserie chicken salad.
The Montana Department of Health announced that a sample of Taylor Farms Pacific Celery and Onion Diced Blend tested positive for E. coli O157:H7.
The blend was used in Costco rotisserie chicken salad and dozens of other products sold at 7-Eleven, Starbucks, Costco, King Sooper, Pantry, Raleys, Savemart, Tonys, Albertsons, Safeway, Vons, Walmart, and Sam’s Club.
Products include holiday-themed Thanksgiving salad kits, stuffing trays, and more. The recall also includes wraps, stir fry blends, and a variety of pre-made salads or salad kits (chicken, seafood, Waldorf, macaroni, potato, etc.).
E. coli O157:H7 is a Shiga-toxin producing strain that causes hemorrhagic diarrhea. In about 5% of cases, the infection causes Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS).
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has reported 19 illnesses linked to Costco rotisserie chicken salad. On November 20, Costco pulled all products off store shelves and discontinued production until further notice.
At least five people have been hospitalized, including two who developed HUS. Illnesses have been reported Montana, Utah, Colorado, California, Missouri, Virginia, and Washington, with the earliest cases reported in early October.
