October 16, 2018 — All 15 Catholic dioceses in Texas will release the names of clergy who have been “credibly accused” of sexually abusing a minor since 1950 on January 31, 2019.
Bishop Edward Burns of the Dallas diocese said the list of names will be released as part of their effort to promote “healing and a restoration of trust” after being accused of covering up sexual abuse for years.
The Diocese of Dallas hired a team of 6 outside investigators made up of law enforcement experts to comb through the personnel files of priests who have served in the diocese since 1950.
The investigation opened after Edmundo Paredes, a former pastor, was recently accused of sexually abusing 3 boys and stealing church funds more than a decade ago.
The Catholic church has been embroiled in scandals as more and more victims of sexual abuse have come forward to name their abusers.
Just days ago, Pope Francis accepted the resignation of Archbishop Cardinal Donald Wuerl for allegedly covering up sexual abuse.
In August 2018, a grand jury report accused the Catholic diocese in Pennsylvania of covering up or ignoring the sexual abuse of at least 1,000 children over the past 70 years.
