Tradjenta and Pancreatic Cancer

Tradjenta (linagliptin) helps adults with type-2 diabetes control their blood-sugar levels. It belongs to a class of drugs called incretin mimetics, which work by stimulating the pancreas to make more insulin.

Type-2 diabetes is a risk-factor for pancreatitis (pancreatic inflammation) and pancreatic cancer. Because Tradjenta relies so heavily on the pancreas, experts are concerned that it could over-stimulate the pancreas and increase the risk of inflammation.

Over time, chronic inflammation in the pancreas increases the risk of DNA mutations that cause cancer. The FDA has been monitoring pancreatic side effects from incretin mimetics for many years. The first warning was issued in 2008. In 2009, the agency asked drug-makers to study the risk of pancreatic cancer.

In 2010, a study published in Gastroenterology linked the two most popular incretin mimetic diabetes drugs with higher rates of pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. In 2013, a study published in Diabetes reported that pre-cancerous growths called pancreatic duct metaplasia were discovered in several pancreases from people who used incretin mimetics.

In response to these studies, the FDA issued a Safety Communication and opened and investigation in March 2013. However, the agency did not update the Warnings & Precautions for Tradjenta or other incretin mimetic drugs.

Judges Consolidate Hundreds of Lawsuits in MDL

Over 750 lawsuits involving pancreatic side effects of diabetes drugs have been centralized in a federal Multi-District Litigation (MDL No. 2452) in California. Unlike a class action, all of the lawsuits are individual and each case can have its own outcome. Like a class action, the MDL or “mass-tort” improves efficiency, eliminates duplicative discovery, and avoids conflicting rulings in different courts.

What is the problem?

The Schmidt Firm, PLLC is nationally recognized as a class action law firm. However, our attorneys are not filing a Tradjenta class action. Instead, we are filing individual lawsuits. If you were diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, you could receive compensation.

About Class Actions

Class actions are a convenient way to help a lot of people resolve their legal claims all at once. Instead of everyone filing a lawsuit alone, everyone joins together and shares any payout awarded by a jury verdict or settlement.

Why Our Law Firm is Filing Individual Lawsuits as Opposed to a Class Action

Members of class actions may have to accept a “low-ball” settlement or watch attorneys take a huge cut of the payout. In some cases, this does not leave much remaining to share among everyone in the lawsuit.

Because class actions are not designed to maximize compensation for individual plaintiffs, our attorneys are filing individual lawsuits. We specialize in holding pharmaceutical companies accountable for failing to warn about severe side effects from dangerous medications.
