Trucking Accidents Kill Over 4,000 People Every Year

Trucking accidents are often catastrophic. Every year, there are approximately 4,000 to 6,000 deaths involving large trucks, and over 100,000 people are injured in crashes. For example, in 2023, there were 114,552 large trucks involved in crashes resulting in an injury, according to the National Safety Council.

Self-Driving Trucking Service Launches in Texas

In May 2025, Aurora Innovation became the first company in the U.S. to launch a commercial trucking service using autonomous, self-driving semi-trucks. The service initially launched in Texas, but has expanded to Arizona and other states.

For now, Aurora’s self-driving trucks will have a human “safety observer” behind the wheel, but the truck is designed to perform all driving tasks on its own using the “Aurora Driver” technology, which relies on a system of cameras and sensors to navigate.

Autonomous Trucking Raises Serious Safety Concerns

Aurora Innovation is just one of several companies that are currently developing or testing self-driving trucks on U.S. highways. There are also several different driving systems.

Self-driving truck technology is an exciting frontier that may someday enable fully-automated supply chains, carrying freight nearly 24/7 across America, which will speed up delivery times.

But there are obvious safety concerns. There is no room for error at highway speeds. Many people are not comfortable sharing the road with an 80,000-pound 18-wheeler going 65-mph. Road conditions can quickly become hazardous, and if a self-driving truck makes a mistake, the consequences could be deadly.

Self-Driving Truck Accidents

Autonomous trucking technology is still very new, but it is likely that self-driving semi-trucks and delivery trucks will become more common on highways and cities across America. This raises serious legal issues, including the possibility of self-driving truck accident lawsuits involving severe injuries or deaths.

Trucking Accident Information

Trucking accidents can occur due to problems with the driver, maintenance issues with the truck itself, unsecured freight, or hazardous road conditions.

In a lawsuit, truck drivers might be held responsible for causing a crash due to the use of alcohol or illicit drugs, prescription medications, speeding, fatigue, inattention, or distractions.

The news is full of stories in which an 18-wheeler driver was doing something besides watching the road, for example talking on the phone or even playing on a computer.

FedEx Truck Accident Lawsuit

FedEx competes with other delivery services to ship packages as quickly as possible, putting drivers under pressure. Unfortunately, even a moment of carelessness can cause horrific truck accidents with other vehicles, pedestrians, or cyclists.
