Gout and Kidney Disease
Gout is a major risk-factor for kidney disease. The kidneys are responsible for cleaning the blood and removing waste products. People with gout have needle-like crystals of uric acid in their bloodstream that damages the kidneys.
What is the Problem?
Gout medications like Uloric may also increase the risk of kidney disease and kidney failure (also called “renal failure”), according to recent studies. Unfortunately, patients may not be aware of the risk.
Study Links Uloric and Kidney Disease
Uloric (febuxostat) with a 5.7-fold higher risk of kidney injury compared to patients who took other gout drugs, according to a safety study. Overall, 7% of Uloric patients died after developing a kidney injury.
The researchers warned doctors to be cautious when prescribing Uloric to patients with pre-existing kidney disease or risk-factors.
The study, “Acute kidney injury associated with febuxostat and allopurinol: a post-marketing study” was published in the journal Arthritis Research & Therapy in November 2019.
What is Kidney Disease?
Uloric has been linked to an increased risk of Acute Kidney Injury (AKI), which is a sudden episode of kidney damage that can lead to renal failure within a few hours or days. When they kidneys are damaged, waste products accumulate in the blood and cause life-threatening health problems.
Symptoms of Kidney Disease
- Not enough urine leaving the body
- Swelling in the legs and ankles
- Fluid retention
- Feeling tired
- Shortness of breath
- Confusion
- Nausea
- Seizures or coma in severe cases
Treatment for Kidney Disease
Uloric patients who develop kidney disease may need to be hospitalized until their kidneys recover. Unfortunately, there have been serious cases in which Uloric patients suffered a devastating loss of kidney function that required dialysis or worsened into kidney failure.
