Vaping and Asthma

Vaping and Asthma

Asthma is a long-term progressive lung disease that can worsen after using vapes or e-cigarettes. Many vape liquids contain artificial flavoring chemicals like diacetyl and acetyl propionyl, which are known risk-factors for lung diseases like “Popcorn Lung.”

Vaping and Asthma

Some studies have found improvements in lung function for people with preexisting asthma who switched from smoking tobacco cigarettes to vaping. However, the link between vaping and asthma is still being investigated.

Many experts say flavoring chemicals should not be used in vaping liquids due to the risk of lung diseases like asthma and “Popcorn Lung.” Removing flavorings like candy or fruit might also decrease the appeal of vaping for children and teenagers.

Flavoring Chemicals in Vaping Liquids Often Exceed Exposure Limits

Tobacco cigarettes often contain more diacetyl than the average vaping liquid. However, some vaping liquids contain significantly more diacetyl than the daily limit set for workers in factories where flavorings are used, according to recent studies:

  • A study published in Environmental Health Perspectives, diacetyl was found in 76% of 51 vaping liquids that were tested, in concentrations up to 239 μg/e-cigarette — over 4-times the daily occupational exposure limit.
  • Another study published by Nicotine and Tobacco Research found diacetyl or acetyl propionyl in 74% of 159 products that were tested. In nearly 50% of those products, the amount of flavoring chemicals exceeded daily exposure limits.

What is Asthma?

Asthma is a long-term lung disease that causes inflammation and swelling of the airways. Asthma attacks (exacerbations) are sudden episodes in which muscles around the airways contract, causing breathing tubes to narrow. Severe attacks can become life-threatening medical emergencies.

Symptoms of Asthma

  • Wheezing
  • Chest tightness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Coughing
  • Problems breathing
  • Fatigue

Treatment for Asthma

Asthma is an incurable lung disease, but many people only have symptoms on occasion. For others, asthma is a debilitating illness that requires frequent treatments — inhalers, oral or injection medications, and lifestyle changes to avoid triggers. In the short-term, oxygen therapy can improve fatigue and shortness of breath.
