May 7, 2014 — Eugene Oregon, Inc., a Pennsylvania-based dietary supplement manufacturer, has issued a voluntary recall for Black Ant, African Black Ant, and Mojo Risen after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned that they may contain hidden pharmaceutical drug ingredients that treat erectile dysfunction.
The FDA detected Viagra (sildenafil) and Cialis (tadalafil) in products that were distributed to a third party. The FDA cautions:
“Conclusive testing has not been done to confirm that the products do, in fact, contain sildenafil and/or tadalafil and this recall is being executed as a precuationary measure.”
The problem with sildenafil and tadalafil is that they can interact with prescription medications containing nitrates, including medications for diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and heart disease. Erectile dysfunction is a common complication of these diseases, which is why men might be drawn to products like Black Ant, African Black Ant, or Mojo Risen.
Unfortunately, drug interactions may cause life-threatening low blood pressure and other side effects. No adverse events have been associated with the recalled products.
Not The First Recall
This is not the first time the FDA has recalled Mojo Risen and Black Ant:
- March 16, 2011 — FDA recommends against using Black Ant after detecting Viagra (sildenafil) at doses that were three times the starting dose for Viagra.
- June 10, 2013 — FDA recommends against using Mojo Risen after finding noracetildenafil, an ingredient that is structurally similar to Viagra (sildenafil).
