Viagra has been linked to an increased risk of melanoma in several recent studies. Melanoma occurs in only 1% of skin cancers, but it causes most of all skin cancer deaths.
Viagra and Melanoma
Viagra (sildenafil) is a prescription drug that treats erectile dysfunction in men. It is made by Pfizer and one of the top-selling drugs of all time. Unfortunately, a growing number of studies have found that Viagra may increase the risk of melanoma, the most dangerous type of skin cancer.
Studies Linking Viagra and Skin Cancer
Some experts say sun exposure is to blame rather than Viagra — essentially, men who can afford Viagra also take more sunny vacations. However, a growing number of studies refute this theory.
In 2014, a study published in JAMA found an 84% increased risk of melanoma among men on Viagra. The following year, Viagra was linked to a 21% increased risk of melanoma in another JAMA study.
Lawsuits Centralized in Viagra MDL
Pfizer is now facing dozens of lawsuits in a centralized federal Multi-District Litigation (MDL No. 2691) in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California under Judge Richard Seeborg.
