What is Viberzi?

Viberzi (eluxadoline) is a medication for adults with irritable bowel syndrome where the primary symptom is diarrhea. Viberzi is a new type of drug that stops diarrhea by slowing down muscle contractions in the intestines.

What is the Problem?

Slowing down bowel contractions is an effective way to stop diarrhea, but it can potentially cause other muscles to slow down the flow of digestive juices into the intestines. This side effect is called Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction. It normally causes pancreatic enzymes to back up into the gallbladder, but in patients without a gallbladder, it causes pancreatic enzymes to back up into the pancreas. This can cause a severe case of pancreatitis, or a sudden inflammation of the pancreas.

What is Pancreatitis?

Acute pancreatitis is a life-threatening condition that involves inflammation in the pancreas. The pancreas is an organ located behind the stomach that releases powerful enzymes into the intestines to digest food — but if these enzymes back up i the pancreas, they digest the pancreas instead.

FDA Warning for Pancreatitis & Death

In May 2017, the FDA published a safety warning after 2 deaths and 120 cases of severe pancreatitis in patients on Viberzi. Some cases occurred after just 1 or 2 doses of Viberzi. The FDA warned that Viberzi should not be used by people without a gallbladder due to the increased risk of severe pancreatitis and death.

Symptoms of Pancreatitis

  • Stomach or abdominal pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Bloating
  • Fever
  • Body chills
  • Diarrhea
  • Indigestion
  • Fatigue

Treatment for Pancreatitis

Pancreatitis is a serious medical condition that requires hospitalization because patients will not be able to eat or drink anything for at least a few days while the pancreas recovers. The patient will need intravenous (IV) fluids, painkillers, and antibiotics to prevent infection. In severe cases, the patient will need to use a feeding tube for a few weeks until the pancreas has healed and the inflammation goes away.
