Volvo Recalls 450,00 Cars for Airbag Injury Risk

In October 2021, Volvo recalled more than 450,000 Volvo S60 and S80 sedans that contain defective airbags that can rupture and explode after a car accident, spewing razor-sharp metal or plastic. The flying shrapnel can seriously injure or kill anyone in the vehicle.

What Vehicles Were Recalled?

The recall involves the following vehicles:

  • Volvo S60 (2001-2009 model years)
  • Volvo S80 (2001-2006 model years)

NHTSA Reports 1 Death Linked to Volvo Airbag Explosions

The recall was announced on October 4 by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), following reports of 1 person who died when the driver-side airbag exploded.

What is the Problem?

“An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death,” according to the NHTSA recall notice. The recalled airbag inflators were made by ZF. They are not related to faulty Takata airbags.

Why Do The Airbags Explode?

The problem is that high humidity and moisture can damage the propellant tablets, which inflate the airbag. The damaged tablets may develop dust particles with more surface to burn when the propellant tablet ignites, which may cause the airbag to deploy too forcefully. The excessive force may cause the inflator to break apart and spew metal shrapnel into the driver or passengers, causing severe injury or death.

What Should I Do?

Volvo dealers will replace the driver’s air bag, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed November 29, 2021.
