Zinus Mattress Lawsuits Filed for Fiberglass Contamination

May 18, 2021 — Zinus Inc. has been hit by a class action lawsuit after people were injured when their Zinus mattress released fiberglass into their homes.

Zinus mattresses are popular “bed-in-a-box” products that are sold by major retailers like Amazon.com, eBay, Target, Walmart and Wayfair.

Since last year, more than than 200 people nationwide have joined lawsuits alleging that Zinus failed to warn them about the risk of releasing fiberglass when they remove the zipper cover on their beds.

All of the plaintiffs took off what they thought was a removable cover because it had a zipper and no warning labels about the risk of releasing fiberglass from the inner mattress.

Once the fibers are released, they are extremely difficult and expensive to clean up. Many people had to throw out their clothes, replace carpets, and pay thousands of dollars in clean-up costs.

Breathing fiberglass particles or skin exposure can also cause breathing trouble, coughing, itching, skin irritation, eye irritation, and other health problems.

Zinus mattresses do not have a a warning against removing the outer cover, according to the lawsuit, or warnings that removing the outer cover can expose the inner fiberglass fibers, which can cause injuries.

One of the plaintiffs removed the outer cover on her Zinus mattress to clean it in January 2020. When the mattress was uncovered, two boys jumped on the mattress in her son’s bedroom.

The next morning, she said her husband woke up suffering from extreme skin irritation and itchiness. He later discovered that “his whole body was covered with little, hard-to-see shards of glass.” Her sons also suffered extreme itchiness and found their home covered in “little shards of glass,” according to the lawsuit.
