3rd Salmonella Recall for Texas Star Macadamia Nuts

October 6, 2015 — For the third time this year, a recall has been issued by Texas Star Nut and Food Co. for macadamia nuts that may be contaminated with Salmonella.

The company also recalled Nature’s Eats Natural Macadamia Nuts on March 20.

On April 7, the recall expanded to include Nature’s Eats and Central Market macadamia nuts. Products were sold at HEB grocery stores in Texas. All lots were recalled as of March 20.

The current recall involves products sold from June 20 through September 9 in Texas, North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee:

  • Nature’s Eats Natural Macadamia Nuts 6oz. – Lot Codes: 35897001; 36157001; 37777001 – Best By Dates: 3/6/2016; 3/12/2016; 7/14/2016.
  • Southern Grove Simply Raw Trail Mix 8oz. – Lot Codes: 36242004; 37534004; 37409004; 38177004 – Best By Dates: 3/13/2016; 6/26/2016; 7/15/2016; 8/17/2016.

No illnesses have been linked to the products. The recall was issued after Salmonella contamination was discovered by the FDA during routine sampling.

This has been a bad year for Salmonella-tainted macadamia nuts. Whole Foods issued three recalls between February and June. Recalls have also been issued by Natural Grocers, Rocky Mountain Foods, Sincerely Nuts, Jansal Valley, Mahina Mele Farm, Kanan Enterprises, Texas Pecan Company, and more.

Healthy adults who are infected by Salmonella usually recover within a week after suffering gastrointestinal symptoms. However, the infection can be deadly — especially for people with vulnerable immune systems. According to the FDA:

“In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”
