What Happened?
In August 2026, Everything Sprouts, LLC recalled 5 lots of alfalfa sprouts that were sold under its own brand-name and also the Calco® brand-name, along with 2 sprout mix cups, after they were linked to an outbreak of E. coli and Salmonella, which some victims infected by both types.
According to the recall:
“Everything Sprouts, LLC, based in Minneapolis, MN is recalling certain lots of Alfalfa Sprouts because it has the potential to be contaminated with Shiga toxin producing Escherichia coli (STEC) or Salmonella bacteria.”
Investigation Links Illness Cluster to Alfalfa Sprouts
Health officials discovered the source of the outbreak when laboratory tests identified a cluster of people who were infected with a genetically-similar strain of E. coli and Salmonella. In interviews with sick people, 26 of them (76%) said they ate alfalfa sprouts in the week before their illness began.
According to the CDC outbreak investigation, tests confirmed that E. coli and Salmonella bacteria in this outbreak are closely related genetically, which suggests that people got sick from the same contaminated food source.
Health officials identified at least 2 clusters of illnesses in Minnesota and Wisconsin, where groups of unrelated people all got sick after eating alfalfa sprouts.
On August 19, 2026, FDA inspectors arrived at the Everything Sprouts facility to inspect it and pull samples. If you ate these sprouts and were told you had a “stomach bug” that summer, this is the evidence trail that may connect your illness to a specific product and a specific company.
How Many People Got Sick?
As of August 24, 2026, health officials have confirmed 55 illnesses in this outbreak. Of those people, 46 were infected with E. coli, 7 were infected with Salmonella, and 2 people were infected with both pathogens. Four people were hospitalized due to a severe illness. The illnesses began on dates ranging from May 31, 2026 through August 8, 2026.

Minnesota and Wisconsin are the hardest-hit states in this outbreak with 38 out of the 55 illnesses, or roughly 69% of victims in this outbreak.

This recall involves the following products, all sold in 5-oz. packaging:
- Everything Sprouts® and Calco® Alfalfa Sprouts (sold in 5 oz containers
- Everything Sprouts® Crunchy Protein Sprout Mix (sold in 5 oz cups)
- Everything Sprouts® Zesty Garlic Mix (sold in 5 oz cups)
- Also sold in 6/5 oz and 12/5 oz trays
- UPC codes: 860014523113, 860014523120, and 850079470149
- Lot numbers: 222, 223, 225, 226, and 230
Where Were the Recalled Sprouts Sold?
The recall explains that “the recalled product was distributed by Everything Sprouts from May 27, 2026 to August 21, 2026 to wholesale distributors and to grocery stores located in MN and WI.”
The supply chain involves wholesalers and repackagers, so it is possible that the recalled alfalfa sprouts may have reached consumers under another label, brand-name, or in a pre-made salad, sandwich, or wrap.
What Are the Health Risks?
The pathogens in this outbreak are Shiga toxin-producing E. coli, or STEC. Three STEC serotypes were identified, O26:H11, O103:H25, and O168:H8, alongside Salmonella Agona. The symptoms of this illness may include:
- Severe stomach cramps
- Diarrhea, often bloody
- Vomiting
- Fever
The symptoms of Salmonella usually include a fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps or pain. These symptoms may be more severe for young children under 5, adults 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems.
Salmonella infections are serious, but STEC infections are more likely to cause severe complications. One example is hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a type of kidney failure that may require hospitalizatoin for treatments like dialysis.
Why Are Alfalfa Sprouts a High-Risk Food?
Sprouts are germinated in the same warm, humid conditions in which bacteria thrive. If contaminated seeds are grown, it is possible that the bacteria can multipyly and contaminate the packaged sprouts that are sold to consumers.
What Should I Do If I Got Sick From Alfalfa Sprouts?
The FDA has published an outbreak investigation warning consumers not to eat, sell, or serve alfalfa sprouts that were recalled under the Calco and Everything Sprouts brand-names.
