Byetta Pancreatitis Symptoms

Byetta Pancreatitis Symptoms

The symptoms of pancreatitis (pancreas inflammation) almost always include upper-abdominal pain that is severe, persistent, and may radiate to the back. Nausea and vomiting may also occur. Byetta patients with upper-abdominal pain should always be evaluated by a healthcare professional due to this potentially life-threatening side effect.

Byetta and Pancreatitis Overview

Byetta (exenatide) is a medication that is approved to help people with type-2 diabetes control their blood-sugar levels. Type-2 diabetes is characterized by chronic resistance to insulin, a hormone that tells cells to absorb more sugar from the bloodstream. Byetta works by triggering the pancreas to secrete extra insulin, which lowers blood-sugar.

Byetta has been linked to dozens of cases of pancreatitis, which is characterized by sudden inflammation of the pancreas. The pancreas produces digestive enzymes, which may activate during a pancreatic attack, causing the enzymes to “digest” pancreatic tissue.

Byetta is linked to the most severe, life-threatening types of pancreatitis, including:

  • Hemorrhagic pancreatitis
  • Necrotizing pancreatitis
