Byetta Thyroid Cancer Treatment & Drugs

Byetta Thyroid Cancer Treatment & Drugs

Most types of thyroid cancer are slow-growing and curable with surgery, radiation therapy, and drug treatments. However, even if thyroid cancer is in remission, patients will require life-long follow-up care to check for recurrence of the cancer. They may also need to take hormone supplements if their thyroid gland was removed.

Surgery to Remove Thyroid Cancer

Thyroid cancer is very rare in patients who use Byetta, and most people are diagnosed with a slow-growing variety. Thyroid cancer grows on the lower-front and center of the neck, where it usually produces noticeable symptoms (such as a lump, nodule, swelling, or neck pain).

The most common and effective treatment for Byetta patients with thyroid cancer is surgical removal of the thyroid gland, and procedures include:

  • Lobectomy: The butterfly-shaped thyroid gland has two “lobes” that wrap around the front and center of the neck. If cancer occurs in one lobe, the patient usually undergoes a lobectomy to remove part of the thyroid. The remaining lobe is usually able to produce some metabolic hormones, which may reduce the need for life-long hormone replacement therapy.
  • Thyroidectomy: This treatment usually involves the complete removal of the thyroid gland. However, in some cases, a small piece of the thyroid gland will be kept.
  • Lymphadenectomy: This is a surgery to remove the lymph nodes, which are located on either side of the neck. When thyroid cancer spreads to other tissues, it often spreads to the lymph nodes because they are nearby.

Radiation Therapy

Some patients with thyroid cancer may require radiation therapy to cure the disease. Radiation therapy is often used when the thyroid cancer is aggressive or it is not diagnosed until it has already spread to other tissues (metastasized). These treatments may include:

  • Radioactive iodine: Patients are treated with a high dose of radioactive iodine, which is absorbed into the thyroid gland tissue. The radiation kills any remaining thyroid tissue, as well as any cancerous cells that may have been missed during a thyroidectomy.
  • External radiation therapy: Patients are treated with a machine that delivers high-energy X-rays to specific locations where cancer cells are growing.
  • Chemotherapy: This treatment involves intravenous administration of drugs that kill cancer cells. There is a high rate of complications, so it is only used for very aggressive cases of thyroid cancer. It is often combined with external radiation therapy.

Drug Treatments

The thyroid plays an important role in regulating the body’s metabolism and calcium levels. If the thyroid gland is removed, the patient will need to take special medications to balance calcium, replace hormones, and prevent the thyroid from growing excessively. Some of these drugs may include:

  • Levothroid
  • Synthroid
  • Levothyroxine
  • And more
