What is Causing Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma to Rise?

No one knows what is causing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma cases to increase in the United States. According to a study published in 2000 by the National Cancer Institute, between 1973 and 1997, there was an 81% increase in new cases of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, with a 4% increase every year since 1950.

In the last decade, new cases of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma have leveled off. However, in 2013, experts estimate that 70,000 Americans will be diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, with a lifetime risk of about 1 in 50. The exact cause behind the majority of these cases is unknown.

What Causes Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma?

According to the National Cancer Institute, the most common causes of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma include:

  • Weak immune system
  • Medications that weaken the immune system
  • Bone marrow transplant or organ transplant patients: Patients must use medications that weaken the immune system after a transplant
  • Genetic conditions: Approximately 25% of people with certain rare genetic conditions that cause immunodeficiencies develop non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in B-cell lymphocytes.
  • Infections and viruses: HIV and AIDS, Hepatitis C, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and more.
  • Age: More than 95% of people who get non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma are adults, and more than half are over the age of 65. The risk increases with age.
