DMAA Side Effects Lawsuit

The synthetically-produced stimulant drug DMAA (an ingredient in OxyElite Pro, Jack3D, party pills, and workout supplements) has recently been restricted from use in dietary supplements. The FDA has received 42 serious adverse event reports related to DMAA, from people who have suffered cardiac disorders (including heart attacks), central nervous system disorders, psychiatric disorders, and death. Despite the fact that DMAA can elevate blood pressure to dangerously high levels, the supplements are aggressively marketed toward fitness enthusiasts, who may use the products before engaging in heavy exercise. Two U.S. soldiers who died after heavy military exercise training were found to have DMAA in their bloodstream.

UPDATE: U.S. FDA Sends Warning Letters to DMAA Manufacturers

April 17, 2012: The FDA has sent warning letters to 10 manufacturers of DMAA supplements, saying “synthetically-produced DMAA is not a ‘dietary ingredient’ and, therefore, is not eligible to be used as an active ingredient in a dietary supplement.” The FDA is also warning that DMAA has been linked to severe side effects, including death. The manufacturers never submitted a New Dietary Ingredient (NDI) notification to the FDA, and the FDA never approved DMAA for use in dietary supplements.

DMAA Side Effects

Side effects of DMAA may include cardiovascular disorders, heart attack, central nervous system disorders, psychiatric disorders, and death. DMAA is known to cause vasoconstriction (narrowing of the blood vessels and arteries), which can significantly elevate blood pressure. Because blood pressure naturally rises during physical activity, it is possible that using DMAA before an intense workout could increase blood pressure to life-threatening levels.

Two U.S. soldiers who had DMAA in their bloodstream died of heart attacks during heavy exercise. The Department of Defense has banned the sales of DMAA supplements on military bases while it conducts an investigation of the ingredient.

Before the FDA restricted sales of DMAA, manufacturers sold it as a “dietary supplement.” Under U.S. law, many dietary supplements are sold without providing any scientific evidence regarding their safety or effectiveness.

DMAA and Cardiovascular Side Effects

DMAA has been linked to severe cardiovascular side effects, including elevated blood pressure, heart attacks, and cardiac arrests. Two deaths linked to DMAA were caused by cardiac arrest.

DMAA is known to elevate blood pressure. When blood pressure becomes severely elevated, the heart may be unable to pump it efficiently into the body (especially during heavy physical exercise). Your muscles and internal organs quickly become oxygen-deprived, and the tissue begins to die. Cardiac arrest can cause severe organ damage, permanent disability, or death.

DMAA has been linked to the following cardiovascular side effects:

  • Elevated blood pressure
  • Increased heart-rate
  • Cardiac arrest
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Heart attack
  • Sudden cardiac death
  • Heart failure
  • Hyperthermia (dangerously elevated body temperature)

DMAA and Neurological Disorders

DMAA is a synthetic stimulant drug with psychoactive properties on mental function. The effects of a stimulant drug (or “upper”) typically include improved alertness, concentration, endurance, motivation, increased physical activity, and decreased appetite, which is why DMAA is popular as a pre-workout / weight-loss dietary supplement.

Even at “normal” doses, however, stimulant drugs can also have adverse effects on mental health. The FDA has received reports of psychiatric disorders and central nervous system disorders linked to DMAA.

DMAA neurological side effects may include, but are not limited to:

  • Seizures
  • Anxiety, nervousness
  • Irritability
  • Headache
  • Trembling
  • Insomnia
  • Depression
  • Unexplainable itching

DMAA Supplements

Some of the most popular supplements containing DMAA include:

  • Oxy Elite Pro
  • Jack3D
  • Biorhythm SSIN Juice
  • Lean Efx
  • Spirodex
  • PWR
  • Napalm
  • Code Red
