What is the problem?

Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is a syndrome that occurs when vaccines activate a person’s immune system and cause it to attack nerves. The immune system destroys myelin, which is the protective sheath around nerve cells in the peripheral nervous system, which are responsible for carring signals between the brain and arms or legs.

How Often Do Vaccines Cause GBS?

Every year, millions of people are vaccinated against virulent, deadly diseases. Only a very small percentage develop GBS. According to an estimate by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), there are about 1 or 2 cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome for every 1 million vaccines.

Vaccines Linked to GBS

A wide variety of vaccines have been associated with GBS. Health officials have specifically addressed this risk with the following vaccines:

  • Swine Flu (H1N1) Vaccine: Also known as H1N1, there was an unexplained increase in cases of GBS linked to this vaccine in 1976-1977. Millions of people were vaccinated, and over 500 cases of GBS were reported.
  • Seasonal Flu Vaccine: A study published by the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2004 reported over 500 cases of GBS associate with the seasonal flu vaccine between 1990-2003.
  • Meningitis Vaccine: The CDC reported dozens of cases of GBS in association with Menactra® (MCV4 meningococcal meningitis vaccine).
  • And more

What are Symptoms of GBS?

Guillain-Barré Syndrome attacks the peripheral nervous system. Symptoms like “pins and needles,” weakness, pain, or tingling typically begin in the fingers and toes. They spread upward into the arms and legs and worsen in intensity over the next two weeks.

Symptoms of GBS:

  • Nerve pain
  • Tingling, weakness, “pins and needles” or “crawling skin”
  • Abnormal sensation of touch, texture, temperature, pain, etc.
  • Weakness in the face (trouble speaking, swallowing, etc.)
  • Paralysis
  • Trouble breathing
  • Heart problems (high blood pressure, arrhythmias, etc.)
  • And more

Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP)

In the 1980s, Congress imposed a $0.75 excise tax on all vaccines to fund the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP). Since 1989, nearly $3 billion has been paid to help thousands of people who were injured by vaccine side effects.

If you developed Guillain-Barré Syndrome, you could be eligible for up to $250,000 in compensation for your pain and suffering, medical expenses, disability, and more.

There are strict filing deadlines, and it is a good idea to talk to an attorney if you are considering filing a claim. Since this is a legal process, most people use an attorney. In general, the VICP will reimburse your attorney’s fees, even if your claim is denied.
