Vaccines and Guillain-Barré Syndrome

Every year, thousands of people are diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), but only a few hundred cases are associated with vaccines. About 1 or 2 cases occur for every 1 million people who are vaccinated.

No one knows exactly what causes GBS, but it is believed to occur when the body’s immune system attacks the peripheral nervous system (nerves that carry signals to the arms and legs).

Over the course of a few weeks, GBS typically progresses from mild tingling or “pins and needles” in the fingers and toes into serious muscle weakness. The most severe cases cause paralysis of muscles that are necessary for breathing. Patients may need to be hospitalized and use a mechanical ventilator.

Although there is no cure for GBS, most people survive the syndrome. About 30% have residual symptoms, such as muscle weakness, three years after their diagnosis.

Many vaccines can potentially cause GBS, but the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has published information specific to the following vaccines:

Guillain-Barré Syndrome Class Action Lawsuit

The Schmidt Firm, PLLC is nationally recognized as a class action law firm. However, we are not filing a class action lawsuit for people diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome after receiving a vaccine. Instead, we are helping people with vaccine injuries seek compensation through a federal program designed to help them.

What is the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program?

Pharmaceutical companies who make vaccines are shielded from Guillain-Barré Syndrome class actions by the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP).

Congress created the VICP in the 1980s with a $0.75 excise tax on all vaccines. That money goes into a fund to be paid out to people who are inevitably injured by side effects of vaccines. It also protects vaccine-makers from lawsuits, which encourages them to make new vaccines without fear of being sued.

Compensation for Guillain-Barré Syndrome

Everyone who files a claim with the VICP is eligible for up to $250,000 in compensation for pain and suffering, medical expenses, permanent disability, legal expenses, and more. Because it is a legal process, most people use an attorney to file a claim. Nearly $3 billion has been paid to help thousands of victims of vaccine injuries since the 1980s.
