Januvia Pancreatic Cancer Causes

Januvia Pancreatic Cancer Causes

Pancreatic cancer is caused by DNA mutations in cells that multiply uncontrollably and form a mass called a “tumor.” Most types of pancreatic cancer start in exocrine cells, which are responsible for making digestive enzymes that break down food.

Does Januvia Cause Pancreatic Cancer?

No one knows if Januvia causes pancreatic cancer. Many patients have multiple risk-factors, which makes it hard to determine what caused the cancer.

Januvia is associated with dozens of cases of pancreatitis, which is a sudden inflammation in the pancreas. Experts are concerned that long-term treatment with Januvia could lead to low-level, chronic inflammation in the pancreas, which could lead to pancreatic cancer.

Furthermore, in 2011, researchers from UCLA linked Januvia to a 2.7-fold increased risk of pancreatic cancer, based on an analysis of adverse events submitted to the FDA between 2004-2009. The lead researcher on the study warned:

“This analysis of the FDA database does not establish that pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer and thyroid cancer are caused by GLP-1 therapy. It simply raises the level of concern that they may be, and that the appropriate prospective studies are required to rule them out.”
