Four Babies Infected in Deadly Outbreak Linked to Baby Formula

At least 4 babies who were fed Similac, Alimentum or EleCare had to be hospitalized after they were infected with Cronobacter. One baby died after being infected with Cronobacter, according to the FDA Safety Warning.

The babies became sick from September 6, 2021 to December 18, 2021. The illnesses were reported in Minnesota (1), Ohio (1), and Texas (2).

How To Identify Recalled Baby Formula

The recall involves all powdered baby formula made in this facility with an expiration of April 1, 2022, or later. The bottom of the containers are labeled with a multi-digit code that starts with the first two digits 22 through 37, and also contains K8, SH, or Z2.

What Happened?

The baby formulas were recalled after 4 consumer complaints of babies who were infected with a bacteria — Cronobacter sakazakii.

When Abbott investigated the complaints, they found the dangerous bacteria in the Strugis facility where the baby formula was made:

“During testing in our Sturgis, Mich., facility, we found evidence of Cronobacter sakazakii in the plant in non-product contact areas. We found no evidence of Salmonella Newport. This investigation is ongoing.”

What is Cronobacter?

Cronobacter sakazakii is a bacteria that cause a severe, life-threatening infection in young infants, including meningitis, sepsis, and necrotizing enterocolitis.

The symptoms of a Cronobacter infection in a baby may include:

  • Fever
  • Very low energy
  • Poor feeding
  • Irritability
  • Temperature changes
  • Jaundice (yellow skin and eyes)
  • Grunting breaths
  • Abnormal movements
  • Seizures
  • Brain damage
  • Intestinal damage

Necrotizing Enterocolitis Lawsuits

Abbott Laboratories is already facing lawsuits involving premature babies who developed Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC) after being fed infant formula.

NEC is a life-threatening intestinal side effect that is far more likely when premature babies are fed formula instead of breastmilk. In the past, powdered milk formula has been linked to deadly outbreaks of NEC in neonatal intensive care units, with tests confirming that the babies were infected with Cronobacter sakazakii (formerly called Enterobacter sakazakii).
