Aciphex and Stomach Cancer

In November 2017, a study published in the journal Gut found a doubled (2X) higher risk of stomach cancer for people who were on long-term treatment with heartburn medications in the Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) class, which includes popular antacids like Aciphex.

Heartburn Drugs Increase Risk of Death

July 2017 — Researchers have linked the use of PPI heartburn drugs with up to a 50% increased risk of death compared to H2-blocker heartburn drugs, according to a study published in the journal BMJ Open. What is Aciphex?

Aciphex is the brand-name for rabeprazole, an anti-heartburn drug in the Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) class. It has been on the market since 1999 and was approved as a generic in 2013.

Aciphex and Kidney Damage

Aciphex and other PPIs have been linked to many case reports of nephritis — sudden inflammation and swelling in the kidneys due to an allergic reaction. According to the FDA, this side effect can occur at any time during treatment with Aciphex. Delayed diagnosis and treatment of nephritis significantly increases the risk of kidney failure and other complications.

Symptoms of Kidney Disease

  • Changes in urine output
  • Fever
  • Fatigue or unusual drowsiness
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Persistent itching
  • Malaise (generally feeling unwell)
  • Fluid retention
  • Swelling in the body due to excess fluid

Studies Find Evidence of Kidney Side Effects

The FDA updated warning labels after researchers warned about dozens of adverse events. Since then, several studies have found evidence that long-term use of PPIs significantly increases the risk of kidney side effects:

  • CMAJ Open (April 2015): PPIs were linked to a 2.5-fold increased risk of kidney injury and a 3-fold increased risk of nephritis in a Canadian study based on data from 290,000 adults over 66 years old.
  • JAMA Internal Medicine (February 2016): PPI users were 20-50% more likely to develop Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), according to a study by researchers at Johns Hopkins University based on data from 10,500 people.

What is the problem?

The Schmidt Firm, PLLC is nationally recognized as a class action law firm. However, our trial lawyers are currently filing individual lawsuits rather than a class action. We always provide free case evaluations, and we are investigating lawsuits involving the following side effects:

About Class Actions

Class actions are the most popular and efficient way for large groups of people to seek refunds after buying defective products. They are also useful when corporations discriminate against employees or defraud shareholders. However, class actions have disadvantages for individual plaintiffs with very severe injuries.

Why Our Law Firm is Filing Individual Lawsuits as Opposed to a Class Action

The problem with class actions is that they are not designed to maximize compensation in personal injury litigation. Members may have to accept “low-ball” settlements or watch attorneys take a huge cut of the payout.

Instead of a class action, our lawyers file individual lawsuits. We believe there is no excuse for drug-makers who fail to warn about severe side effects. We specialize in helping people who were injured seek compensation for their pain and suffering, past and future medical expenses, and more.
