B. Braun Warns Surgeons to Stop Implanting Certain Aesculap Knee Replacements

In November 2020, B. Braun warned surgeons to stop implanting certain Aesculap knee replacements due to a “possible malfunction.”

According to a letter on November 16, the company is investigating a growing number of reports of the Aesculap Univation X Knee Replacement System loosening and needing revision surgeries.

B. Braun classified the risk as “critical” to patients, but said they were “not assuming a product-related malfunction.” Even so, B. Braun asked surgeons to temporarily stop implants through January 31, 2021, while the company investigates reports of loose knee implants.

The letter explained that a “locally accumulated number of aseptic loosenings have been reported to us in connection with the Univation X System. ln the affected patients, the loosened knee endoprostheses had to be revised or will be revised.”

Aesculap Knee Implant Lawsuits

In recent years, B. Braun and its subsidiary, Aesculap Implant Systems, have been hit with dozens of knee replacement lawsuits alleging that the implants are prone to loosen and fail.

What is the Problem?

Aesculap knee replacements are ceramic-coated implants. The ceramic coating was advertised as an “advanced surface,” but instead, lawsuits allege that it is prone to loosen and fail prematurely.

Problems With Knee Implant Loosening

Lawsuits claim that the implants fail to properly attach the the bone cement. The problem may be linked to the ceramic coating, which repels moisture, but allows moisture to accumulate on the surface of the implant under the bone cement, interfering with bonding.

Surgeons Report Problems With Aesculap Knee Implants

One surgeon said “the implant components were easily removed by hand, using just two fingers, or after a single mallet strike,” according to lawsuits.

Aesculap is accused of downplaying problems with knee implants loosening, despite numerous complaints from surgeons who discovered that the implants were not properly bonded to the bone cement during follow-up surgeries.

  • And more

Complications of Revision Surgery for Knee Implants

Often when a bad knee implant loosens and fails, the only solution is surgery to fix the problem. Unfortunately, revision surgery has its own risks. Patients may have permanent bone loss, muscle damage, one leg shorter than the other (causing a limp or abnormal gait), expensive medical bills, lost income, and more.
