What is the Exactech Truliant Knee Implant?
Exactech is a medical device company that manufactures Truliant® Knee Replacement Systems. In February 2022, Exactech recalled 24,727 Truliant knee implants that were sold in the U.S. since 2017.

What is the Problem?
Like other knee implants recalled by Exactech in February 2022, the Truliant® Knee System has a plastic insert to cushion the joint.
Unfortunately, this plastic (polyethylene) insert was packaged in an “out-of-specification” vacuum-sealed bag that did not actually keep oxygen out. Exactech warned that the plastic can oxidize more quickly due to early exposure to oxygen, causing it to wear out early and fail.
The problem can cause “severe damage” to the knee implant, as well as other problems, according to the recall notice:
“[The problem] can lead to both accelerated wear debris production and bone loss, and/or component fatigue cracking/fracture, all leading to corrective revision surgery.”
What is the Risk?
Exactech found a 3- to 7-fold increased risk for knee revision surgery due to complications of the plastic polyethylene insert (such as loosening, bone loss or pain), according to a study of joint registry data in Australia, the U.K., and New Zealand. The overall rate of knee replacement failures with Exactech Optetrak were 2-times higher.
Symptoms of Early Knee Failure
Patients who were implanted with a recalled Truliant knee replacement may experience the following symptoms if it fails:
- Knee pain
- Swelling or redness
- Instability
- Unable to put weight on the knee
- Trouble walking
- Falls
- Abnormal sounds (grinding, clicking, etc.)
- Bone loss (osteolysis)
- Cracking or fractures
- Corrective surgery to replace the plastic insert
