August 18, 2025 — Amazon has paid a button battery lawsuit settlement after a child was severely injured.
Court records show that Amazon and its insurers agreed to pay $517,000 in costs, but the lump sum to the family was not published.
The lawsuit was filed in February 2024 on behalf of the child, identified only as “A.A.,” who was just 16 months old when he swallowed a small button battery that easily fell out of a remote control.
The defective remote control, which was intended to be used with Apple CarPlay, was purchased from Amazon.com by his parents.
The button battery caused severe chemical burns to his esophagus and required emergency surgery, according to the lawsuit. He also suffered lifelong injuries that will need more surgeries in the future.
The remote control was sold on Amazon by a third-party seller based in China, called Shenzhen Cheyang Technology Co. Ltd., which did not make an appearance in the case.
The lawsuit accuses Amazon of selling a defective product that was “unreasonably dangerous,” and could have been designed in a safer way to prevent the button battery from falling out and causing injuries.
The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington — Case Number 2:24-cv-00195.
