Arby’s Restaurant in Illinois Linked to Norovirus Outbreak; Nearly 100 Sickened
In March 2021, health officials in Illinois confirmed that nearly 100 people who ate at an Arby’s restaurant were infected with Norovirus, according to the State Journal-Register.
Where Was the Outbreak?
According to Sangamon County Department of Public Health director Gail O’Neill, the Norovirus outbreaks were linked to an Arby’s located in Springfield, Illinois, at 3009 S. Dirksen Parkway.
What Happened?
The Arby’s initially closed for cleaning on Wednesday, February 24, after reports of at least 40 people falling ill. The restaurant re-opened just one day later, and more customers soon developed infections.
The same Arby’s restaurant closed again on Monday, March 8, after dozens of new illnesses were reported. Health officials recommended that the restaurant undergo more cleaning, and employees undergo more training. In response, the Arby’s agreed to close until April 1.
92 People Sick in Springfield Arby’s Norovirus Outbreak
Health officials confirmed a total of 92 people were infected with Norovirus after eating at the Arby’s restaurant. The virus typically causes 48 hours of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and stomach cramps.
How Does Norovirus Spread?
Norovirus can spread very easily in restaurants when infected food -workers get sick and handle food without wearing gloves. The virus spreads when tiny particles of poop or vomit from a sick person contaminate raw or ready-to-eat foods.
