Aurora Packing Co. Recalls Beef Due to E. coli Risk

March 27, 2019 — Aurora Packing Company, Inc. has recalled approximately 4,838 pounds of beef heel and beef chuck tender products due to a risk of E. coli O157:h7 contamination.

The bulk beef products were produced and packed on February 27, 2019 and shipped for institutional use in Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin.

Health officials are concerned that some of the recalled beef may be in institutional facility freezers.

The recall involves the following products:

  • Varying catch weight cardboard box case packages containing bulk pieces of “AURORA ANGUS BEEF BONELESS BEEF – CHUCK TENDER” and case code 61150 represented on the label.
  • Varying catch weight cardboard box case packages containing bulk pieces of “BONELESS BEEF – HEEL MEAT” and case code 29970 represented on the label.
  • Varying catch weight cardboard box case packages containing bulk pieces of “BONELESS BEEF – HEEL MEAT” and case code 49970 represented on the label.

The recalled beef products are marked with establishment number “EST. 788” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

The risk of E. coli contamination was discovered during traceback activities following routine testing, according to the USDA Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS).

No reports of illnesses have been confirmed due to consumption of the recalled beef products.

E. coli O157:H7 is a bacteria that can cause severe and sometimes fatal infections. Symptoms include dehydration, bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps for 3 or 4 days, on average. Most people recover within a week, but some victims develop a type of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS).
