Scientific Protein Laboratories LLC (SPL), B. Braun’s supplier, recently Heparin Sodium USP active pharmaceutical ingredient (API).
What is the problem with Heparin?
On March 21, 2008, B. Braun began recall the lots of heparin due to a notification received from the supplier, Scientific Protein Laboratories (SPL), disclosing that one lot of Heparin Sodium, USP Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient acquired by B. Braun Medical Inc. has a heparin-like contaminant. To date, B. Braun Medical Inc. has not received any adverse event reports related to this issue. The FDA has received adverse event reports from patients who have received Heparin injectable product of other companies containing the same contaminant.
Side Effects of Heparin
There are a variety of side effects associated with these contaminated syringes:
- Anaphylactic-like reactions
- Low blood pressure
- Shortness of breath
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal pain
