Buffalo Burgers & Ground Bison Recalled for E. coli Risk
July 2019 — Northfork Bison Distributions Inc. of Quebec, Canada recalled ground bison and bison patties (referred to as Bison Burgers and/or Buffalo Burgers) that were sold in the United States after an outbreak of E. coli.
How Many People Are Sick?
At least 21 people in 7 states were infected with E. coli:O121 and O103 from March through June 2019, including 8 people who were hospitalized, according to the outbreak investigation update from the CDC on July 16, 2019.
The following states have reported illnesses: Connecticut (1), Florida (4), Michigan (1), Missouri (1), New Jersey (2), New York (9), and Pennsylvania (3).
No deaths have been reported. No one has been diagnosed with Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), which is a serious kidney complication that occurs in 5-10% of people with E. coli.
Buffalo Burger Recall
The recalled bison burgers and ground bison items were produced between February 22, 2019, and April 30, 2019 and distributed throughout the Eastern and Central United States.
The recalled bison patties were sold in 4×4-ounce blue boxes labeled as “Northfork Bison” with expiration dates through October 8, 2020.

E. coli Food Poisoning
Every person has different symptoms of E. coli, but the most common symptoms are severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (often bloody), and vomiting for 5 to 7 days.
