Blue Apron Meals Linked to Listeria Risk
In October 2025, the USDA Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) published a Public Health Alert to warn about a risk of Listeria contamination in certain Blue Apron Cheesy Chicken Mac with Vegetables, a microwaveable meal tray with riced cauliflower.
Is There a Recall on Blue Apron?
No. The USDA did not ask Blue Apron to announce a recall because the products are no longer available for purchase.
Instead, the USDA issued a health warning because the contaminated meals may still be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers. The meal trays were delivered frozen, and the label urges customers to freeze the product, or microwave it and eat it within 5 days.
Listeria Can Survive on Frozen Foods
Listeria is a type of bacteria that can survive on foods that are frozen or refrigerated, and cause a serious illness called listeriosis. People can get sick if they eat food that is contaminated with Listeria. There is also a risk of cross-contamination on kitchen utensils or surfaces, even if the food is heated to a temperature that is sufficient to kill Listeria.
What Happened?
No illnesses were reported as of October 7, 2025. The problem was discovered by FreshRealm, a company that supplied riced cauliflower ingredients to Blue Apron. The riced cauliflower tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can cause infections.
What Meal Kits May Be Contaminated With Listeria?
The USDA Food Safety Alert involves two microwaveable meal trays that were sold by Blue Apron and Marley Spoon:
- Blue Apron: 13.05-oz. plastic tray packages labeled “DISH by Blue Apron Cheesy Chicken Mac with Vegetables” with lot codes 25240 and 25247. The product bears establishment number “P-3081.”
- Marley Spoon: 10.5-oz. packages labeled “BALANCE by Marley Spoon BBQ Sauce Beef Meatballs with Cheesy Cauliflower” with lot code 25255. The product bears establishment number “Est. 47718.”
Health officials also provided photos of the Blue Apron Cheesy Chicken Mac with Vegetables Meals. The product is fully-cooked, delivered frozen, and intended to be microwaved before it is eaten, or frozen for future use.
What Should I Do?
Check your refrigerator or freezer for “Blue Apron Cheesy Chicken Mac with Vegetables” meal kits with Lot codes 25240 and 25247. This product should be thrown away, or returned for a full refund.
People who ate the product should be vigilant for symptoms of Listeria, which may not appear for up to 10 weeks.
Anyone can get seriously ill, but this illness is usually most dangerous for pregnant women, elderly adults, and people with vulnerable immune systems. According to the USDA:
“Persons in the higher-risk categories who experience flu-like symptoms within two months after eating contaminated food should seek medical care and tell the health care provider about eating the contaminated food.”
