BMPEA is a stimulant drug that is a beta-isomer of amphetamine. It was developed in the 1930s and was hoped to replace amphetamine, but abandoned after studies in cats and dogs showed that it could raise blood-pressure and heart-rate.

BMPEA is also known as:

  • βMePEA

  • R-beta-methylphenethylamine HCl
  • Beta-methylphenethylamine

BMPEA Linked to Bleeding in the Brain

A case report of a 53 year-old woman who suffered a life-threatening hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding in the brain) after taking a BMPEA-laced workout supplement was published by the Archives of Internal Medicine.

The victim reports that she took a normal dose of Jacked Power, made by MM Sports, thirty minutes before working out. Investigators found 290-mg of BMPEA and 300-mg of caffeine in a standard dose of the supplement. Click here to read more.

Acacia Rigidula Supplements May Contain BMPEA

Acacia rigidula, also known as blackbrush, does not contain BMPEA and the chemical is not an extract or a constituent of the plant, according to testing by the FDA in 2013. The tests found BMPEA in nine supplements with Acacia rigidula on the label.

FDA Warning Letters

In April 2015, five companies received warning letters from the FDA for selling eight pre-workout supplements laced with BMPEA.

Harvard Researchers Find BMPEA in 11 Acacia Rigidula Supplements

Researchers at Harvard led by Dr. Pieter A. Cohen expressed concern that the FDA found BMPEA in nine supplements in 2013, but did not pull them off the market or issue any public warnings.

To see whether the supplements were still laced with BMPEA, Dr. Cohen and colleagues tested 21 supplements. They found BMPEA in 11 supplements and published results in Drug Testing & Analysis in April 2015.

According to Consumer Reports, supplements containing BMPEA include:

  • Aro Black Series Burn (Vitocost)
  • Dexaprine XR (IForce Nutrition Tribravus Enterprises)
  • MX-LS7 made by iSatori
  • Black Widow (Hi-Tech Pharmaceuticals Inc.)
