April 24, 2015 — Five manufacturers of weight-loss and bodybuilding supplements that contain BMPEA, an amphetamine-like stimulant, have received warning letters from the FDA.
The letters demand that the manufacturers stop selling BMPEA-laced supplements, or risk further enforcement action. Warning letters were issued for the following manufacturers and products:
- Hi-Tech Pharmaceuticals Inc.: Fastin-XR, Fastin-RR, Lipodrene
- Train Naked Labs LLC: Critical FX, Sudden Impact
- Better Body Sports LLC: Phoenix Extreme
- Human Evolution Supplements Inc.: Core Burner
- Tribravus Enterprises LLC (iForce Nutrition): Conquer
What is BMPEA?
BMPEA (beta-methylphenethylamine) was first synthesized in the 1930s as an alternative to amphetamines, but it was poorly studied and the effects in humans are unknown. Experts are concerned about side effects like increased blood pressure and heart-rate. The World Anti-Doping Agency has banned BMPEA in athletic competition.
What is the problem?
In 2013, the FDA tested 21 supplements that listed extracts of the Acacia rigidula plant on the label. Nine of the products were found to contain BMPEA.
The FDA concluded that BMPEA did not come from the Acacia rigidula plant, but the agency never named those supplements or took enforcement action against manufacturers.
The warning letters were issued just weeks after experts decided to take another look. Dr. Pieter Cohen and colleagues at Harvard published a study listing 11 dietary supplements that contained BMPEA. They also demanded enforcement action by the FDA.
