August 9, 2024 — A third death and 10 more hospitalizations have been linked to Boar’s Head deli meat that was contaminated with Listeria, including a pregnant woman who filed a lawsuit.
As of August 8, a total of 43 people in 13 states have been infected with the outbreak strain of Listeria since May 2024. All of them were hospitalized.
Three deaths were also reported in Illinois, New Jersey, and Virginia, according to the CDC Outbreak Investigation.
One person got sick during their pregnancy and remained pregnant after recovering.
The woman filed a lawsuit claiming that she “nearly lost her unborn child” after eating Boar’s Head Deli Meat that she purchased at a Publix store in Florida. She was 36 weeks pregnant when she was infected with Listeria and hospitalized.
Listeria infections are particularly dangerous during pregnancy. The risks include miscarriage, premature birth, low-birth-weight infants, infection of the newborn baby, and infant death. Infected babies can also develop severe health problems or brain damage.
