Investigators Find 351 Sex Abuse Survivors in 35 States
In September 2020, an ongoing investigation by Hearst Connecticut Media found 351 victims in 35 states who said they were sexually abused as children by employees, volunteers and other members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and its affiliates since the 1960s.
12 Men File Lawsuit Against Boys & Girls Club of Northern Westchester
The Hearst investigation was prompted by lawsuits against the Greenwich Boys & Girls Club by survivors who said they were sexually abused in the 1970s through the 1990s, according to Greenwich Time.
By January 2021, a total of 12 men had filed lawsuits for sexual abuse involving James Collins, a former employee of the Boys & Girls Club of Northern Westchester in Kisco, New York.
One of the survivors described the abuse as, “Something out of a horror story.” The lawsuit claims that some victims were as young as 10 years old, and further alleges that several adult employees witnessed or knew about the sexual abuse but did not stop Collins.
Other Examples of Sexual Abusers in Boys & Girls Clubs
Dr. Reginald Archibald: Doctor who volunteered at Madison Square Boys’ Club in New York City in the 1940s through the 1960s. Lawyers claim he likely molested and sexually abused thousands of patients in examination rooms.
Richard Gallegos: Lawsuit claims that Gallegos, a former gym coach at the Boys & Girls Club of Metropolitan Phoenix in Arizona, sexually abused a 6th-grade boy at the club in the 1980s.
Landreth “Landy” Harrison: A former volunteer at the Boys & Girls Club of San Fernando Valley in California, was sentenced to 14 years in prison for sexually abusing or raping 6 different boys ranging in age from 10 to 12 years old.
Dwayne Kilgore: Lawsuit was filed against the former athletic director of the Sonoma Valley Boys & Girls Club, who was sentenced to 150 years to life in prison for sexually abusing 3 boys at the organization, including one boy who was just 6 years old when the molestation began. Another victim reported sex abuse in 2007 and 2010, but he was allegedly ignored by employees of the Boys & Girls Club, who also failed to notify police.
