Vaccines and Brachial Neuritis

Vaccines injected into the shoulder can potentially cause brachial neuritis, a painful condition involving inflammation of nerves. It is an extremely rare side effect of vaccines, but vaccines are associated with up to 15% of all cases of brachial neuritis.

Experts believe it occurs due to an inflammatory response to toxoids in vaccines. Toxoids are bacterial toxins (usually endotoxins) that are de-activated, but still produce an immune response.

Case reports have linked brachial neuritis with the following vaccines:

What is Brachial Neuritis?

Brachial neuritis causes sudden, severe shoulder pain. The pain is sharp and stabbing rather than throbbing or dull. It typically occurs for 3-10 days, but sometimes weeks. Then, patients experience progressive weakness and/or numbness. These symptoms gradually improve over the next 6-18 months, but some patients are left with residual weakness or even paralysis.

What Causes Brachial Neuritis?

Brachial neuritis is caused by inflammation of the brachial plexus, which is the bundle of nerves that come from the cervical spine in the neck and run down the length of the arm.

What Else is Brachial Neuritis Called?

Brachial neuritis is also known by other names, including:

  • Parsonage-Turner Syndrome
  • Brachial Plexitis
  • Brachial Plexopathy
  • Brachial Plexus Injury
  • Brachial Neuropathy
  • Acute Brachial Radiculitis
  • Parsonage-Aldren-Turner Syndrome
  • Brachial Plexus Neuropathy

Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP)

In the 1980s, Congress established the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP) to help victims of vaccine injuries seek compensation, while shielding vaccine-manufacturers from lawsuits.

The VICP is funded by a $0.75 tax on all vaccines. This fund has paid thousands of people nearly $3 billion since 1989. Each claimant is eligible for up to $250,000 to pay for their medical costs, pain and suffering, disability, and more.

Tetanus Vaccine and Brachial Neuritis

The VICP specifically warns about brachial neuritis from vaccines containing tetanus (DTaP, DTP, Td, or TT) in March 1997. Claimants are eligible for compensation if symptoms began within 2-28 days after receiving the vaccine.

Brachial neuritis is defined by the VICP as follows:

“A deep, steady, often severe aching pain in the shoulder and upper arm usually heralds onset of the condition. The pain is followed in days or weeks by weakness and atrophy in upper extremity muscle groups. Sensory loss may accompany the motor deficits, but is generally a less notable clinical feature. The neuritis, or plexopathy, may be present on the same side as or the opposite side of the injection; it is sometimes bilateral, affecting both upper extremities.”
